Whippomorpha zetazeoak (baleak, izurdeak, eta abar.) eta bere senide hurbilenak, hipopotamoak, barnean dituen kladoa da.[1]
Whippomorpha izena ingelesezko (wh[ale] = balea + hippo[potamus] = hipopotamo) eta grezierazko (μορφή, morphe = forma) hitzen lotunea da. Cetancodonta berrizendatzea saiatu arren[2] Whippomorpha aurretik zegoen hautatua.[3]
