Xerophyta Juss., 1789 è un genere di piante della famiglia Velloziaceae^[1]^[2], originario dell'Africa, del Madagascar e della penisola arabica.^[3]

Alcune specie di questo genere, in condizioni climatiche secche, perdono la clorofilla e cessano la fotosintesi e la traspirazione. Pertanto sono estremamente tolleranti nei confronti dell'essiccazione.^[4] Da qui il nome Xerophyta, dal greco antico ξηρός (xeros, "secco") e φυτά (phutá), plurale di φυτόν (phutón, "pianta").
