Resident Evil Requiem[a] is an upcoming survival horror game developed and published by Capcom. It is the ninth main game in the Resident Evil series, following Resident Evil Village (2021).[3] It features a new protagonist, FBI agent Grace Ashcroft, who is dispatched to investigate a series of mysterious deaths at a hotel.
Capcom announced Requiem at 2025 Summer Game Fest. It is scheduled for release on February 27, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S.
Gameplay
[edit]Resident Evil Requiem is a single-player survival horror game where players can switch between first-person or third-person perspectives at any time.[4] This included option of first-person and third-person gameplay is a break from recent Resident Evil entries that were exclusively first-person.[b] First-person perspective is the default for Requiem which offers "tense, realistic gameplay" according to Capcom while third-person is "ideal for people who enjoy action-packed gameplay".[5]
The player assumes the role of FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft who is pursued by a monster throughout the game, similar to Mr. X and Lady Dimitrescu of previous Resident Evil games.[4] To avoid detection by this monster, the player can crouch and sneak to make less noise and hide under objects like tables. However, the monster can also stalk the player through walls and ceilings. The player can distract the monster by collecting and throwing glass bottles found throughout the environment.[6] The player has access to a lighter to illuminate dark areas, though this light will also attract the attention of the monster.
Premise
[edit]FBI technical analyst Grace Ashcroft is dispatched to investigate a series of strange deaths at the Wrenwood Hotel, where her mother Alyssa died 8 years prior.[7] The story is set in Raccoon City, about 30 years after its destruction in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis.[8] Capcom has described Grace as an introverted bookworm who feels powerless due to not being proficient in combat like other Resident Evil protagonists such as Leon S. Kennedy or Jill Valentine.[4][9]
Development
[edit]On July 1, 2024, a Capcom Showcase presentation revealed that the next main Resident Evil entry was in development and would be directed by Koshi Nakanishi.[1] According to Nakanishi, the game was initially conceived as an online open world multiplayer game but the concept was scrapped during the early stage of development for a more traditional single-player Resident Evil game, as the development team felt that "it wasn't what the fans wanted".[10]
On August 20, 2025, a new trailer was revealed to show more of Grace's backstory with a cutscene segment of her and Alyssa while showing some gameplay.[11]
As with all Resident Evil games since Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (2017), Requiem has been developed using the RE Engine.[7] Resident Evil Requiem will feature path traced lighting which includes ray traced global illumination, ray traced shadows, and ray traced ambient occlusion.[12]
Release
[edit]Capcom announced Resident Evil Requiem at Summer Game Fest on June 6, 2025, with a release date of February 27, 2026.[13][8][5] The trailer was the show's concluding reveal.[14] The trailer featured the devastated Raccoon City, including the police station of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3.[15][5] Resident Evil Requiem was added to over 1 million wishlists across all the platforms it is set for release on.[16] A playable demo was made available at the 2025 Gamescom convention in August 2025.[17]
