Mixtape Pluto is the seventeenth mixtape by American rapper Future.[1] It was released on September 20, 2024, through Freebandz (under the business name Wilburn Holding Co.) and Epic Records, marking his first solo release in two years, following I Never Liked You (2022) and his first solo mixtape release in eight years, following Purple Reign (2016).[2] It also marks Future's third release of 2024, following his duology with Metro Boomin, We Don't Trust You and We Still Don't Trust You.[3] With no guest appearances, the mixtape's production was primarily handled by Southside and Wheezy, with help from ATL Jacob, FnZ, Honorable C.N.O.T.E., London on da Track, Neenyo, and several other producers.[4]
Background
On May 8, 2024, Future first hinted towards the release of a tape announcing Mixtape Pluto to be released on May 10.[5] Following the release of We Don't Trust You and We Still Don't Trust You with Metro Boomin, this would mark his third release of 2024.[6] However, it would eventually turn out to be postponed. In July 2024, producer Southside revealed that he was working on the project and described the work as a "new sound, like a whole new vibe".[7] On September 2, four months after the project was first promised to be released, Future announced in a social media post that the project was "bout to drop" with a snippet of a song titled "Lil Demon" playing as Future turns up to the recording studio.[8] The project would also see preorders become available, along with the confirmation of its status as an album. To promote the release, a 30-second video trailer was shared the following week with another song playing in the background.[9] Another snippet titled "South of France" with Travis Scott was shared a few days prior. Future shared the artwork and release date alongside a snippet of a track titled "Too Fast" on September 11.[10] The track listing was revealed on September 17.[11]

Clash | 8/10[12] |
Robin Murray for Clash wrote that the mixtape is "beset with jewels", referring to "Surfing A Tsunami" and "Oath". However, he also stated that "it’s not perfect" and that there are "some moments that don’t hit as hard as others", highlighting "Plutoski" and "MJ". Murray concluded his review by writing that, "Mixtape Pluto offers ample evidence to [Future's] continuing singular form of genius".[12] HotNewHipHop's Elias Andrews wrote in a positive review, "Mixtape Pluto is the comeback that mid-2010s fans have been waiting for. The song titles are concise and hard-hitting, as the beats and lyrics."[13]
